SCANNER REPAIR

If you have a scanner which needs repair, there are two good options:

  1. Send it to the manufacturer
  2. Send it to a reputable independent repair shop such as G&G Communications.

  • Contact the manufacturer and send it to them. They have lots of experience making any repairs your radio may need, and the best possible access to any parts that may be needed.  Turnaround time is typically 10 days to 2 weeks.
  •  Radio Shack: 800 843-7422 (they say take it to your local store, and the store will send it in)
  • Uniden: 800 297-1023 Monday-Friday, 7am to 4pm Mountain time. To speed up the process, go to their repair webpage to 'pre-register' to send them your radio.  The cost is $59.50 for most scanners, including return shipping.  You can indicate your check number, or your credit card information at that time.
  • GRE repairs are now handled by a third-party contractor, and all repairs are considered non-warranty repairs.

  • One independent company specializes in scanner repair:  G&G Communications.
  • Their rates are reasonable; $40 labor, plus parts and shipping. They've been in business since 1973. Their e
stimate fee is $20, which includes return shipping if you decide not to repair the scanner.
  • Turnaround time is 2-3 weeks if parts are in stock.
  •  Phone 1-716 768-8151.

Shipping:

When you ship your scanner for repair, US Postal Service Priority Mail Flat Rate is very convenient.  A small handheld scanner-size box ships for $6.80, and a larger base/mobile-size box ships for $13.45. There are no weight calculations or limits!  The boxes are free at the post office, just pay the postage and insurance when you mail it.  It's a good way to simplify the process of shipping your radio.

You'll want to insure it; insurance will add about $6 to the cost.

You can cushion the radio with those packing peanuts, or use crumpled newspaper.
